why Tasmania? why not?

Four and a half months ago I moved permanently to Tasmania.

Over the years I’ve visited for 2 or 3 weeks at a time and explored a lot of the island. Now I’m a Tasmanian.

Do you know the feeling you get when you get home and know that you are where you should be? That’s what I am feeling now.

I wake up every morning and stand on my deck and drink in 180 degrees ocean vista! Looking north across Bass Strait, east toward the rising sun and west to the mouth of the Tamar River.

The day can start as a breathtaking sky and light wind then change in hours to overcast.  The promise of rain, a few drops then blue sky again, more wind and white caps. The only constant is the wind. Always cool, mainly from the southwest, sometimes playful, sometimes serious.

Holiday homes, shacks and ingenious dwellings, sit in rows facing the beach. Native bush, gum trees and lone pines mesh it all together. Some of my neighbours are permanent but most seek out the area to recharge energy lost in day-to-day lives.

My house started life as a single, well-constructed room with toilet. Add a double garage shed, turn that into a rumpus room then build a 2-bedroom rectangle box further up the block and add a large deck to the house. A few grevilleas, a lot of agapanthuses and lots of grass all accessed by 12-foot-long farm gate.

That’s home to me, Bo, my miniature dachshund and Freyja, my tabby cat.

I’ve turned the rumpus room into a large studio. A space I’ve dreamed of forever. There’s room for my stash, a corner for research and one for my loom. Natural light and gallery hanging on the walls. I have plans for a permanent loom to be built on one wall.

I am designing it now.

Two studio easels sit proudly at one end with a backup easel by the wall.

The original single room is my office and has accommodation for guests.

I dream of welcoming family, friends and other creatives. I want to share my passion and experience.
