We are excited to bring you our 3rd series of Workshops in the Fibre Makers Space at Brough House.

We’ve listened to your requests and have put together a package of ½, 1 and 2 day workshops that should have your creative juices flowing on overtime!

Workshops are presented by a group of talented creatives who will share their knowledge with you in a productive and happy space.

 

Vicki Cornish, our Artist in Residence will hold half day workshops. Learn the ancient craft of Nalbinding or learn to use a Mayan Spinner. Barbara Osmond will create tapestry landscapes and give you the knowledge to reimagine your op shop buys. Sharon O’Rourke will demystify the art of gauging or smocking;

Dianna Kellerman will introduce you to traditional and random basket weaving and Ellen Howell will show you how to reimagine op shop linen

with photosensitive dying and how a simple stamp can transform your textiles.

Saturday April 15th

Stitch Like a Viking - Learn the Ancient Craft of Nalbinding 10am to 12 noon

Before the invention of knitting, clever humans created beautiful textiles using a technique called nalbinding. In this workshop Vicki will teach you the basics of this ancient craft and show you how it can be used to create wonderful, contemporary textiles. During the workshop you will make a gorgeous woollen egg warmer as your first nalbinding sample. $45 tuition, materials supplied ($20 materials fee payable to the artist on the day). https://www.trybooking.com/CGJQT

 

Learn to Spin with a Mayan Spinner 1pm to 4pm

If you knit, crochet or weave and are curious about making your own yarn, this is the workshop for you! Mayan Spinners are robust, portable, and easy to use tools and a fun introduction to the craft of spinning. Vicki will teach you all the basic spinning skills of drafting fibre, adding twist and plying. Then you will explore a range of fibres to create your own unique yarn. Reimagining Op Shop Linen with Photosensitive Dye 10am to 3pm

The local Op Shop is a treasure trove of good quality linen and napery. Join Ellen as she shows you how to take a tired tablecloth from Grandma and transform it into a vibrant, stunning textile that you’ll use every day. You’ll be able to choose from a variety of op shop textiles, then Ellen will guide you through the process of using photosensitive dye and shapes from the garden. Saturday May 6th

Monoprinting on Textiles 10am to 3pm

Monoprinting is the process of creating and printing a single design. On a Perspex sheet you draw into a layer of ink and cover it with a piece of fabric. The result is a one impression that will delight you. Use your textile panel as printed or paint, embroider or quilt it. $60 tuition, materials supplied

Saturday May 27th

The Art of Smocking or Gauging 10am to 3pm

Used for over 300 years, smocking is the pleating or gathering of material used to shape simply cut garments and control the fullness of the fabric. Sharon will start you on a journey of discovery and teach you how to complete a basic panel of smocking. She will then explain how that can be applied to dresses, blouses, home furnishings and more. If you have a garment that you think can be smocked, bring it with you and ask Sharon. Sunday May 28th

Textile Stamping 10am to 3pm

Stamping on fabric has been used for centuries and is a simple but highly effective way of making prints and patterns on fabric. Ellen will teach you how to create a dynamic design by repeating a simple stamp. You will be able to use stamps that Ellen has created for this workshop or be guided in carving your own simple stamp. Everyone will be supplied a textile to stamp. Bring your own textile to stamp if you want! Sunday June 4th

Re-Imagining Wearables – Creating Patterns 10am to 3pm

Learn about design possibilities in altering existing clothing to create new wearables. Using several garments with identified chosen features, learn how deconstruction to examine pattern pieces, aids problem solving with a given Garment Design Brief. Saturday June 17th

The Art of Coiling Basket Weaving 10am to 3pm

Coiling is a slow almost meditative form of weaving, with different stitches giving your weaving a unique look. Learn to use/reuse/upcycle and recycle materials including fabric, foliage, and onion bags. Using a variety of materials and stitches your weaving will have great texture and colour! At the end of the class, take home your completed basket or perhaps a coaster/tray as well as the skills and knowledge to continue weaving at home! $60 tuition, materials supplied ($20 materials fee payable to the artist on the day). https://www.trybooking.com/CGLVQ

 

Sunday June 18th

Random Plant Fibre Weaving 10am to 3pm

You will find random weaving quite a freeing form of weaving that allows you to create different shapes. If you have ivy, grapevine, wisteria, or another strong vine you would like to experiment with please bring it along, minus the leaves. Make a wall hanging/ a basket/ or a sculptural form and enhance your weaving by adding feathers, beads, ribbons if you would like to bring your own favourites from home, please do.
