APRIL

Wednesday 3rd  6.30pm to 9pm              Make a Felt Bowl with Amanda Donohue

Learn the ancient craft of wet felting wool to create your own unique small felt bowl. Wet felting is a wonderful and versatile craft that can be used to create both beautiful and functional objects. In this workshop, you'll learn new skills and take away your own felt bowl. You’ll learn about templates, laying out the wool tops, felting and shaping. We’ll also talk about how you can further embellish your bowl. All materials and equipment will be provided. $10 Material fee payable to the tutor.

Saturday 6th 10am to 12.30pm                Learn Basketry and Random Weaving with Dianna Kellerman

Spend a wonderfully creative morning with Dianna Kellerman. The freeform and random weave technique allows freedom of form. Dianna will introduce you to weaving both utilitarian items such as baskets and sculptural forms including hanging wall art. All materials and equipment will be provided. $10 Material fee payable to the tutor.

Wednesday 17th 6.30pm to 9pm             Kwanda Quilting with Janet Steele

Kwanda, also known as Kwandi quilting, travelled to India from Africa. It is a colourful way of converting tiny scraps of cotton fabric into amazing placemats and coasters. Participants need to bring a backing piece of cotton fabric 50 x 80cm. Also bring scissors, pins, darning needle, size 8 crochet thread and lots of your favourite-coloured scraps of cotton. Wadding will be provided, cost of $5.

Saturday 20th 10am to 12.30pm              Learn Fundamental Embroidery with Sharon O’Rourke

Spend a wonderfully creative morning with Sharon O'Rourke. Sharon will introduce you to seven foundation embroidery stitches and variations of each and show you how they can be utilised to embellish and decorate clothing and home furnishings.

Wednesday 24th 6.30pm to 9pm            Basic Knitting with Barbara Osmond

Learn to knit with plain and stocking stitch using several of your favourite colours. Learn to cast on and off, increase and decrease stitches and use garter stitch. Take your knitting with you and start a knitting project at home. If you have your own yarn and needles, and a row counting device please bring them. (8 or 10 ply yarn and appropriate needles are good for beginners). If not some needles and yarn will be available to you.

Saturday 27th 10am to 12.30pm              Creative Sashiko and Boro stitching with Amanda Donohue

Learn a variety of creative stitch techniques, including Japanese sashiko and boro, to make your own decorative textile item (fish, bird, star, heart) from felt or other fabrics such as cotton and linen. This workshop is a great way to find out about different hand embroidery and embellishment techniques including Japanese sashiko and boro.

A variety of fabrics, lace, buttons, and threads will be available for you to choose from, and all necessary equipment will be provided. If you have any particular fabric you want to use, or if you have your own needlework kit, please feel free to bring it along.

MAY

Wednesday 1st 6.30pm to 9pm                Drop Spindle or Traditional Wheel Hand Spinning with Barbara Osmond

Please bring your own wheel if you can. There are two Ashford traditional spinning wheels available for those without their own wheel. Wool to spin will be supplied as will accessories to add into the yarn. If you have any lace, ribbon, or twine you think would look good in art yarn please bring it. $10 Material fee payable to the tutor.

Saturday 4th 10am to 12.30pm                   Fundamental Crochet with Sharon O’Rourke

Crocheting is a fun hobby that anyone can learn! Sharon will show you the six most common crochet stitches: chain stitch, single crochet, double crochet, treble crochet, half-double crochet, and slip stitch. These easy crochet stitches are a good foundation for improving crochet skills as a new crocheter. Yarn and crochet hook kit $5 but bring your own if you have some favourite yarn.

Wednesday 8th 6.30pm to 9pm                   Make a Creative Beanie, Beret, or Cap with Barbara Osmond

Using the basic skills of knitting, crochet, twining and sewing we will look at making a head covering as a “fun” item for any occasion. Materials supplied. $10 Material fee payable to the tutor.

Saturday 11th 10am to 12.30pm                 Make a Japanese Shopping Bag with Janet Steele

Turn 80cm of leftover cotton fabric or a remnant into a handy Japanese shopping bag. You will also need 80cm of a plain colour cotton or polyester to line the bag. Bring sewing thread to match or contrast with the main fabric, also scissors and pins. An overlocker and sewing machine will be available for you to use, however, to avoid any waiting, participants may bring their own machine.

Wednesday 15th 6.30pm to 9pm               Eco Dyeing with Rebecca Muscat (Artist In Residence 2024)

In this demonstration of Botanical dyeing, Rebecca will cover the necessary techniques and materials for the extracting colour from nature. You will explore the process of eco printing as well as immersion dyeing using kitchen waste, plants, and natural extracts. You will have the opportunity to dye a selection yarn samples to experience the process of botanical dyeing.

Wednesday 22nd 6.30pm to 9pm              Make a Patchwork Baby’s Ball with Janet Steele

These hand stitched patchwork balls are ideal for new-born babies and for grandparents. All equipment and materials needed are provided, the cost of the kit is $20. There will be a wide range of colour choices for this project.

Saturday 25th 10am to 12.30pm                Small scale 3D Felt workshop with Giselle Penn (Artist In Residence 2024)

Come and explore a variety of wet felt techniques to make your own unique felt wearable or small-scale sculpture. Giselle will step you through sampling to produce felt balls, felt rope and surface decoration. With these techniques you can choose how to progress making a jewellery piece or small-scale sculpture.

Wednesday 29th 6.30pm to 9pm                Wrapping to make a small mat or wall hanging with Janet Steele

 Learn about this fast-growing technique of wrapping to create a small to medium size mat or wall hanging. There is likely to be sufficient cord available to also create a set of individual earrings as well. The technique resembles the double half hitch knot used in macrame and used to construct tatted lace. We concentrate on the artistic possibilities of this method of construction. All materials are provided in a kit costing $15. Bring your own scissors.
